It’s almost most Summer time, and in the south that means fresh produce, like the beloved tomato and sunshine!
One of the things that takes me back to my childhood memories in the Summer are tomatoes! Tomatoes are a childhood memory for me for many reasons. My dad was the local county agent (for those of you who don’t know what that is…think of it as a “plant + crop doctor” ) He would help farmers diagnose and treat their crops, and well I think having a huge garden in our backyard and eating fresh fruits and vegetables that the farmers sent home with my daddy, were just all part of my Summer living and upbringing.
Some of my favorite dishes that included tomatoes, were my granny’s tomato gravy and home made biscuits for breakfast. Now from watching her, she would crush up tomatoes put them in an iron skillet and add, a little brown sugar and tomato paste, water, salt and pepper and flour and make a tomato rue. After this cooked down and thickened, it was served over biscuits for breakfast and or possibly lunch over rice. I truly thought it was the best thing.
On Sundays, in the winter, mama would start a pot of navy beans early in the morning and they were served over white rice with tomatoes and tomato gravy. This is still one of my favorite dishes…my type of comfort food! And of course the common Sunday afternoon plate of tomatoes and fresh cucumbers with salt and pepper. I’m not sure where they mayo thing came in, other than watching my dad do it.
So, when I was by Savannah Soiree, to come up with a Summer time themed stylized shoot, I knew it had to be centered around the produce I grew up on, like the tomato, not to mention some of my favorite fruits, blood oranges and grapefruits.
