The Healing Effects of Bone Broth
Not only have I been on the journey to healing my gut since December 1, 2015 due to being diagnosed with leaky gut and IBS, but this past week I was hit with the “crud” as we call it in the south. I felt like someone clipped forceps to my head and was pressing from both sides, not to mention my ears were popping like crazing.
So need I say more, one of the staple ingredients to my diet since December has been bone broth! I typically have at least 2 to 3 cups of both broth a week.
Obviously, our grandmothers and mothers, knew exactly what they were talking about when they would serve you chicken noodle soup when you were sick…there’s a truth to be told about that!
Why is bone broth able to heal our bodies?
First and foremost, homemade bone broth is excellent for speeding the healing and recuperation from illness. You’ve heard the old tale that chicken soup is good for the body and soul.
For starters, chicken contains a natural amino acid called cysteine, which can thin the mucus in your lungs and make it less sticky so you can expel it more easily. Processed, canned soups will not work as well as the homemade version made from slow-cooked bone broth.
For best results, you really need to make up a fresh batch yourself…or if you’re not much of a cook like me, or perhaps cutting a chicken carcuss grosses you out like me (Sorry Mom + Sis, they so got the cooking “jeans of the family), then your options are ( ask a friend or family member to cook one for you or buy bone broth yourself). Be careful about the spices you add, especially when battling an Autoimmune disease. I can only have organic sea salt. Pepper causes increased irritation so, HOLD THE PEPPER…for now at least.
After drinking a few glasses of this a week, yes the taste gets really old, but the results are amazing, and I tweak mine and started adding Turmeric (Turmeric is for a whole other blog posts) but Turmeric helps decrease inflammation! So if you are battling this with me, you’ll learn to love it!
But the benefits of broth don’t end there. As explained by Sally Fallon:3
“Stock contains minerals in a form the body can absorb easily—not just calcium but also magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur and trace minerals. It contains the broken down material from cartilage and tendons–stuff like chondroitin sulphates and glucosamine, now sold as expensive supplements for arthritis and joint pain.”
So….I’m NOT A DOCTOR, but I feel like after all of the research I’ve done and common sense. When you have leaky gut or IBS, your body is C O M P L E T E L Y malnourished and drained from all of the vital nutrients you need, but no matter how hard you try to restore the nutrients it’s unable due to the holes in your intestines. So the only way to get the proper nutrients is by absorbing them, and since Stock is easily absorbed and you don’t have to digest it, it’s perfect!!!
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m calling this the new wonder drug! I also have read some studies that say it decreases cellulite by 40%!
So, yes part of my beauty regimen is 2-3 cups of Bone Broth a week.
Drink up!
